What Do I Do if I Find Asbestos in My Home?

It can be scary to think that hazardous asbestos could be in your home. Although most people are aware of how dangerous the substance may be, they may not know how to properly detect and dispose of it. Make sure to call a service for asbestos removal Los Angeles, California residents rely on as soon as possible to minimize risk of exposure. Here are a few tips to heed if you think you’ve encountered asbestos.

  1. Leave it be just in case.

Don’t panic if you have found asbestos material in your home. Usually you aren’t at risk if the material is undisturbed, but you should still be cautious. Leave the material where it is and be sure not to damage or disturb it so the asbestos particles aren’t airborne.

  1. If you are doing renovations around the house, be on the lookout.

It is imperative that if you find asbestos material, that you exercise extreme caution around it. The slightest disturbance may send particles into the air and that will lead to exposure. ALways take the proper safety precautions and be sure to find out beforehand if your home contains any asbestos materials.

  1. Do an inspection for any damage.

Even if you don’t damage or disturb the material in your home, you should also keep up with regular inspections to make sure the material is intact. Even a small amount of damage can be hazardous to anyone in the house. Be sure to check up on the areas containing the material often, this will help you avoid exposure and serious health problems.

  1. Never touch the material.

Inspections should be limited to visual discoveries. You should never touch the materials; if you do, you are likely to release asbestos particles in your home which leads to health issues like mesothelioma–a severe form of cancer. Any disturbance could release particles from the material in the air.

  1. Hire a professional asbestos removal service.

If you want to begin renovations and are concerned about any asbestos materials in your home, then you will need to contact professionals to inspect and/or remove it. Professionals can safely remove or secure the material so that it does not infect you and your family. This is the safest course of action, as you should never attempt to do anything with the material by yourself.

If you are concerned you may have been exposed to asbestos material due to another’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for damages. Contact a personal injury lawyer today to discuss your legal options.
