Chiropractic Care and Insurance Coverage Conditions

Personal Injury Lawyer

When you need a chiropractic adjustment, you may hesitate because of the cost. Will you be able to afford the initial appointment? What about follow up visits? The good news is there are a lot of insurance plans that cover chiropractic care, though each plan is unique to the individual and their insurance company.

Short-Term and Long-Term Conditions

Most health plans include short-term chiropractic care. You may have a co-pay at your visit, but the insurance provider will pick up the rest of the charge. Long-term conditions and long-term chiropractic maintenance are sometimes not covered at all. As soon as your condition is treated, some insurance companies pull funds all together. If you choose to maintain the issue for an extended period, the cost could fall in your own lap because the insurance company won’t see it as medically necessary.

Other Requirements and Limitations

Your insurance policy might contain other requirements and limitations regarding chiropractic care. First, it may require a referral from your primary care doctor. Second, your doctor might have to follow a specific plan of care. Third, there will be certain chiropractors you may or may not be able to see due to them being in-network or not. Finally, your insurance policy may state how many times you can see a chiropractor per month or year. It’s important you understand these limits so you receive proper coverage.

Payment Options Without Insurance Coverage

If your insurance plan doesn’t cover chiropractic care, or if it limits visits and you feel you need more, you do have other options. Consider taking the following steps.

  1. Speak with your primary care doctor to see if he or she can contact the insurance company. If your doctor is able to provide proof of necessity, you may be allowed a certain amount of chiropractic visits.
  2. Contact the insurance company yourself to explain your situation. The provider may not realize your care actually requires a chiropractic adjustment, but could think it’s just something extra you want until you provide an explanation.
  3. Speak with your chiropractor about a payment plan or a discount. Some chiropractors offer a discount if you pay in full with cash, others could have a variety of payment plans to help every patient to afford their care.

Receiving the Relief You Need

To receive the relief you need from chiropractic, contact your chiropractor today. Whether your insurance provider covers all, part or none of your adjustments, there are options to help you afford what you need.
